We have had a busy few days with Colwall Primary School running three separate events to support of Rotary’s ‘End Polio Now’ campaign.
It started with the Inaugural Young Musician of the Year Competition which took place in front of a packed house of pupils, staff, parents, grandparents and Rotarians. Heats had been run in the school over previous weeks to produce 12 finalists on the evening who performed pieces as varied as ‘Fur Elise’ by Beethoven, ‘Naughty’ from Matilda the Musical by Tim Minchin, ‘My favourite Things’ by Rogers & Hammerstein and ‘The Princess Waltz’ by anon.
The fact that David Lowe agreed to be one of the judges added prestige to the evening. David as well as being a Colwall resident is a music composer and producer, specialising in creating music for TV and radio in the UK and internationally.
The competition pieces were supplemented by music from the school choir, Mrs Becky Webb and Helen Webb and her husband who played a duet for violin and piano.
David said, “Deciding upon a winner was not easy because the music was so varied . We were not comparing like with like. In the end though one stood out, because of my emotional response to it.” Ava not only composed her own song she accompanied her singing on the guitar”
Helen Webb said, “All those taking part deserve great praise. They’ve practiced so hard and you cannot underestimate the character needed to perform by yourself in front of an audience.
“The evening has been a great success. there was a real buzz in the audience and we’ll certainly repeating it next year. Thank you for the support of Colwall Rotary
