At the same time as the Young Chef Competition, there was a similar Textile Design Competition. Year 10 students were challenged to design and make a coffee cafetiere cover. The best nine student designs were chosen for the final competition, once again sponsored by Colwall Rotary Club, and on the evening the students had two hours to make their covers.
They were judged on costs, planning, presentation, neatness of work, range of skills used and of course the originality of their design and the use of materials and colours.
Once again the standards were very high and it was a delight to watch the students working so diligently and independently and the high levels of their skills.
All the designs were based on Fair Trade, used wadding to keep the coffee hot and the best used a broad range of skills including tie dyeing, block printing, quilting, applique and hand sewing.
In third place was Ffion Skipper, in second was Rosie Isserlis and in first place Biddy Hyde.
All the contestants were presented with certificates and the three placed contestants received textile design books. Unfortunately there is no District or National Competition – yet! But the winner will be invited to Colwall Rotary Club’s Young Achievers’ Dinner in the new year.
