Year 10 pupils from the Chase School were eager to get slicing and dicing for this year’s Rotary Young Chef competition, which was sponsored by Colwall Rotary Club.

Staff at the School had organized the earlier rounds of the competition and nine finalists had won through to this stage.

Menus – of either a starter and a main course or a main course and a dessert – had been carefully selected and trialed, with the ingredients purchased for under £10.> The contestants were judged on a variety of skills: planning of menu, healthy choices, cost, organization of their working area, hygiene, the range of skills used in the preparation of the menu and, of course, the taste and presentation of the dishes.

At the same time as the Young Chef Competition, there was a similar Textile Design Competition. Year 10 students were challenged to design and make a coffee cafetiere cover. The best nine student designs were chosen for the final competition, once again sponsored by Colwall Rotary Club, and on the evening the students had two hours to make their covers.

The Rotary Club of Colwall will be holding a bucket shake at Waitrose in Great Malvern on Saturday from 10am until 6pm.in order to raise funds to support the disaster in the Philippines. The club has already sent a donation of £1000 to the ShelterBox organisation which provides emergency shelter and lifesaving supplies for families around the world who are affected by disasters, at the time when they need it the most. This collection will enable the club to send even more.

The ShelterBox solution in disaster response is as simple as it is effective. They deliver the essentials a family needs to survive in the immediate aftermath of a disaster. Each large, green ShelterBox is tailored to a disaster but typically contains a disaster relief tent for an extended family, blankets, groundsheets, water storage and filtration equipment, cooking utensils, a basic tool kit, a children’s activity pack and other vital items.

More information on ShelterBox can be found on their website at www.shelterbox.org or on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/ShelterBox.

Eleven Rotarians ventured on the "European Away Weekend" to Vienna, the fourth such trip undertaken by club members.

The difficult part of the trip had to be confronted right at the beginning - a 4.15am start on the Saturday morning! As a result, the minibus trip to Birmingham Airport was a rather subdued affair and cold and dreary weather did not help.

After a beer "pick-me-up" at Frankfurt Airport our spirits were further lifted on arrival in Vienna where we were greeted by warm sunshine and a Mercedes executive minibus which took a myriad of back-doubles including what appeared to be a building site before dropping us off at Rainers Hotel which would be our "home" for the next three nights.

For the third year running the Chase School arranged for 8, Year 10, pupils to take part in a cook-off to select a candidate to go forward to the Rotary District 1100 semi-final. These pupils had already come through heats in which over 70 had taken part. The school final took place on Tuesday 4th December and each student was asked to prepare, cook and serve a healthy 2-course meal for two people, costing no more than £10 for ingredients, in 1 1/2 hours. The three judges were impressed with the overall standard achieved and were unanimous in selecting Zoe Snee as the winner and candidate to go forward to the District 1100 semi-final. Meanwhile,in the Textile and Design Department 6, Year 10, pupils were taking part in a competition where their remit was to make, from their own design, a wine bottle jacket within 2 hours. Again an overall high standard and much ingenuity was shown, the winner being Tia Campbell. The Rotary Club of Colwall sponsored each of these competitions. District 1100 semi-final ...

In December Colwall Rotary Club hosted two ‘Light Up a Life’ Christmas trees – one outside the Colwall Coffee Lounge, the other above the Brewers Arms in West Malvern. This year we were blessed with fair weather, the tree light dedication services were extremely well attended and the money raised for St Michael’s Hospice surpassed all expectations. Gift Aid has still to be added in to the total, but so far the income raised for the Hospice has reached £1342.

Nicky West, the Hospice’s Chief Executive said: “This is an amazing total. The money raised will make a significant difference to patients and carers at the hospice”.

None of this would be possible without the wonderful support of the two venues, local businesses and individuals. Thank you so much to everybody who contributed so generously to Light Up a Life through their time, efforts and donations.

This is the week our members deny themselves the comforts of the Malvern Hills Hotel and travel to meet with other Rotary Clubs and participate in their club activity.

This fulfils one of Rotary's objectives; The development of aquaintance as an opportunity for Service.

We do not know who we will meet, or what they do or who they know, but someone at that meeting may be able to help us in one of our local activities at some time in the future.

Locations already identified for visits are Ross-on-Wye, Worcester and Southam (in Warwickshire).

A group of 9 members of Colwall Rotary Club paid a visit to Berlin last weekend.

Colwall Rotary visit BerlinOne of the objects of Rotary is to Promote International Understanding & Goodwill through visits, exchanges and other means.

During this visit we met with a local club - The Rotary Club of Berlin Unter den Linden, where we were made extrememly welcome; to such an extent that they held the meeting totaly in English! I think that we would struggle to return the compliment.

Featuring amongst other acivities a cycle ride through the city centre on Sunday morning and a visit the to DDR Museum all the group achieved a greater understanding of what the city has been through. The general feeling was that this was a place to go back to.

People think that Rotarians are "old people" so what better than to show it by going back in time !

The Severn Valley  Railway regularly hosts 1940s weekends and this year members of Colwall Rotary Club attended, and did so in style by wearing period costume. As  the planned train journey from Malvern to Kidderminster was replaced by a Bus Service due to engineering works, we gave a lot of people something to smile about.

This event gets a high profile in Kidderminster and the venue was packed. Our train left at noon and part of the ride was taken up with Sunday Lunch. Afterwards the train progressed up the line past various stations, all of which were themed for the weekend. The was much live music at many stations and the quality of the music was top class.

Many thanks to Rotarian Nick Paul for organising this enjoyable...

Friday night was "dining where you pleased", with a dinner in the hotel on the Saturday.

The feature trip was a boat trip up river to Greenway, the house that had been owned by Agatha Christie.

Eight members of Colwall Rotary Club recently made a trip to Strasbourg to visit the Rotary Club of Strasbourg Europe and the European Parliament.

The trip commenced at 6am on Saturday 19th April at Great Malvern Station as the trip was made by rail all the way as the Rotarians were keen to experience the ups and downs of making such a long trip in the most green manner. Changes in London (for the Eurostar) and Paris (to complete the trip on the new TGV Est line) resulted in the group arriving in Strasbourg at 4:45pm local time.

Local Rotary Clubs raised over £300,000 by public collection immediately after the Tsunami in January 2005.
Within a few months Rotary supplied over 100 Shelter Boxes and 78 Fishing Boats to help provide food and income for the communities in two villages in South East India.
Providing new homes and facilities in India and Sri Lanka was then a priority but with villages being moved away from the beaches new roads had to be built and Government permission obtained.
