Colwall Rotary ran their heat for the National Rotary Young Chef Competition at the Chase Academy in Malvern on Thursday 17th November.
The Academy had run heats to select eight pupils to take part in the competition, which was to cook a two course meal costing no more than £10 in two hours.
Rotarian Chris Mill said of the afternoon, “Brilliant afternoon with the Chefs. Food fantastic.”
Chief Judge Jenni Griggs said:
“It was a special afternoon, the chefs achieved an extremely high standard and all the pupils cooked their hearts out. Emily, Thalia and Alfie, from Year 7, treated us to Hairy Bikers' Chicken Bake followed by a Very Berry Fool, Nadia's Fish Curry followed by Baked Apples and Bacon-wrapped Figs with Goat's Cheese followed by an Onion, Brie and Sun-dried Tomato Tart. Maisie, Jamie, Sophie and Amber from Year 9 gave us Salmon with Anchovies, baby tomatoes and black olives on French beans followed by chocolate chip cookies and cookie ice cream; chicken, bacon and pasta stir fry followed by chocolate brownies and cream; Spaghetti Carbonara with garlic bread followed by warm chocolate fondants; mini toad in the hole with caramelised onion gravy, fondant potatoes, green beans and baby corn followed by a cinnamon and apple crumble. The skills demonstrated and the flavours achieved by all the contestants filled the judges with admiration.
We were unanimous in choosing this year's winner - Maisie Lewis - who showed such calm organisation and skill in preparing her dishes, which we couldn't stop eating. I won't say what her dishes were as it would spoil the surprise in January! Amber McManus and Jamie Brown came a worthy second and third.
All the contestants were a credit to themselves, their teacher, Mrs Fay Borthwick, and the school. Thank you for inviting me to be one of the judges, it is a great privilege and I love to see the pupils pushing themselves to achieve new heights. They were a chatty, sociable bunch which added to our enjoyment.”

The winner, Maisie Lewis, has been invited to cook he menu alongside the Chef from the Malvern Hills Hotel at the Colwall Rotary Club youth Night on Thursday 12th January, before going onto the District Rotary Young Chef Rounds early in February.
